Asphalt shingle is the most common residential roof in this market, and the distance between a standard re-roof and a properly specified shingle installation is wider than most homeowners realize. Grade, wind rating, underlayment specification and manufacturer all affect how the roof performs in a climate this demanding — and, increasingly, how your insurance carrier treats it.
None of that is visible on a quote that says "architectural shingles" and a number. It is worth asking the specific questions below of anyone bidding your roof, including us.

Grades We Install
Standard architectural
Dimensional shingles from Owens Corning, GAF, TAMKO and CertainTeed. A substantial step up from the three-tab shingles still found on a lot of older housing stock here, carrying the ASTM D3161 Class F wind rating and Florida Product Approval, with a realistic twenty to thirty year life in this climate.
Algae-resistant
Treated shingles that resist the black streaking that shows up on north-facing and shaded roofs in this humidity. The streaking is not purely cosmetic — the growth holds moisture against the surface and accelerates granule loss. A modest premium, and worth it on a roof that does not get much sun.
Impact-resistant
A higher grade that some Florida carriers will discount for, in exchange for a higher material cost. Whether it pays back depends entirely on your specific carrier’s discount schedule, so it is worth evaluating case by case rather than treating as automatically worthwhile. We will talk it through against your actual policy at the quote.
The Wind Rating Requirement
County codes here require shingles meeting the ASTM D3161 Class F wind resistance rating for re-roofing, which is equivalent to 110 mph. Separately, most of our service area sits inside Florida’s Windborne Debris Region, where the design wind speed requirement for the structure runs 130 to 150 mph across the northern counties and higher again in Collier.
Those two numbers describe different things and get conflated constantly. Every shingle we carry from all four manufacturers meets or exceeds the covering requirement. If you are weighing shingle against another material entirely, the residential roofing page runs the comparison against tile and metal.
Manufacturers and Choice
We carry lines from Owens Corning, GAF, TAMKO and CertainTeed — all four with strong Florida track records and products built for high-humidity, high-wind coastal markets.
There is no single best one. The practical differences come down to warranty terms, color and style availability, and price point rather than one brand meaningfully out-performing the others on wind resistance or durability. Anyone telling you otherwise is telling you which one they buy cheapest.
Selection is broad across all four, from the weathered wood tones common in established neighborhoods to contemporary charcoal and slate blends. If your property is under HOA architectural review — which covers a great deal of Lakewood Ranch, Osprey, Venice and Naples — we can identify options that satisfy both the code and the association, and supply the samples and documentation the board will ask for.
What You Get From Us
- Florida Product Approved, every shingle, meeting the wind rating required in your specific county.
- Four manufacturer lines, which means real choice on warranty, price and appearance rather than one supplier’s catalog.
- Permitted every time, with county inspection and Certificate of Completion included rather than optional.
- The grade that fits, not automatically the most expensive one. If impact-resistant will not pay back on your policy we will tell you that.
